Agent Carter here- SHIELD, the agency built from the SSR I helped start, is in quite a pickle. There’s a splinter within the agency, there’s powered people running unheeded and Hydra seems to be coming back to full force. Let’s have a peek.
Fitz is on the run. For someone who has some damage of the brain, he runs and thinks on his feet quite well. He leads them a merry chase right to the top of a parking deck. And gets in the cloaked QuinJet with Mike aka Deathlock, Hunter and our fearless leader, Coulson. They discuss the worst of their options, a sit down with Ward, to get to Dr. Liszt and Baron Strucker.
Dr. Listz is creepy, he is indeed collecting powered people and experimenting on them. He regrets the current subject is too dead to be useful. He tells his underling to take the ‘sample’ and compare it with the others.
Cal and Jaiying are chatting about how their family is doing after this happy reunion. Cal is worried Skye is still scared. Jaiying says Gordon will take him to get his stuff from home, but it’s clear she has an alternate plan in mind.
Skye and Lincoln are playing a game and Skye is daydreaming. Lincoln has mentioned Cal’s impending banishment and Skye says it’s a bad idea. She thinks Cal will get furious and hurt innocent people around him. Lincoln tells her to mention her concerns to Jaiying.
Mack and Bobbi spar and chat. Bobbi is definitely better at this, despite Agent Mack’s obvious assets of strength. They discuss the ongoing situation and wonder if they are spending far too much time looking for Coulson, rather then hunting Hydra. It’s nice to see someone has finally picked up on this obvious fault, even if they are convinced Fury’s Toolbox really needs finding.
When May tells Simmons they really need the Toolbox, Simmons tells May the truth, May says she’ll take care of it. Simmons is obviously relieved. Later, May and Bobbi come into Simmon’s lab and May has explained that Fitz switched the Toolbox and stole it. So perhaps Simmons can tap into Deathlok’s feed and see what Coulson is doing? Simmons, rather annoyed, agrees to do so. Even later, she vents her annoyance at May’s betrayal of Fitz. May reminds Simmons that she’s lucky not the be in the brig.
Agent 33, Kara, is in Mexico chatting via phone with her mom and learns that suited men have been looking for her. Coulson has already found her. They call Ward to bring him to the party. Fitz and Hunter chat about doing things they don’t want to do. Like work with Ward. It is true sometimes we must make bedfellows of enemies to fight worse enemies!
Ward and Coulson sort of make a deal. Coulson figures Ward knows a guy to get them close to Hydra, were they can use Bakshi to get in good with Listz. Ward is in no way thrilled, especially at the mention that a Tahiti protocol could be in order. But Coulson realizes that Ward cares for Agent 33 and pushes all the right buttons, including not to hunt for Ward if he works with them. Ward agrees, but clearly has his own agenda.
Jaiying and Gordon chat about Raina. It is discussed that Raina may be the first precognitive ever, as Gordon was the first teleporter. Then Skye comes in to tell Jaiying that she thinks dropping Cal off will be a danger to anyone around him when his anger gets the better of him. Later she convinces Jaiying to let her accompany Cal for a while and keep him calm. She’s surprised that in another chat to Cal, that she feels empathy for him.
Cal and Skye get dropped off in Milwaukee. They wander the city and Cal remanences about the life he planned. He is also quite put off that none of his old haunts are around. He misses the fresh buttery, bakery smells he use to experience on the way to work, which is now just a bank. Skye keeps Cal cool when they get bumped in the street. Averting the incident, Skye sends Cal in for ice cream and using a stolen phone, calls May. Skye reports in about her sit-rep, asking for Coulson to come capture Cal and then dumps the phone so she can be traced. Skye of course, did not realize she was contacting new SHIELD.
A complying Bakshi and Listz meet. Deathlok acts as bodyguard. Listz interrogates Bakshi. Bakshi offers Deathlok as a gift, saying with a compliance upgrade he’ll be right as rain. Coulson and Ward are having words, disagreeing on how things should be going. Deathlok is ready to blast everyone in the room but Coulson and Ward agree to disagree, which enables Fitz to let Mike know to play along for now. So he decides not to blast everyone in the room. A Hydra operative reports that there’s been an incident like before and Listz orders the plane to the location. Coulson and his team follow.
On the respective planes we see things unfolding. Coulson is following Deathlok’s view. Listz is plotting. He in fact has been using physics of the quantum entanglement variety to track the activities of a special person, likely Gordon as that seems to leave a trace disturbance. This seems to be how Listz has been getting his hands on powered people.
Cal and Skye go to Cal’s old office. Cal keeps showing Skye all his neat stuff. He is most pathetic as a long lost father and sociopathic murder. Skye warns him not to hang on to the past. She says she’ll come and visit and they hear a noise. It’s just Lincoln.
Hydra is here! Or somewhere.
Cal and Lincoln get into it when Cal realizes that he was about to be abandoned.
Hydra hears a noise! Deathlok is sent to investigate.
So Hydra has found them, but we see Coulson land to get to Skye. Jaiying is concerned for Skye, when she learns Ethan disappeared. I believe the phrase we would use in the Howling Commandos about what happens next is FUBAR. There’s a lot of fighting and the upshot is, Hunter is shot, Hydra takes Lincoln and Deathlok, May and Simmons get a glimpse, via Deathlok cam, of what looks like Coulson working with Ward and Gordon comes back to get Skye and Cal jumps a ride. Ward rightly calls for a retreat. Their only back up is Fitz and he doesn’t have any upgrades that would help them!
We end with Bobbi and Mack looking over the scene and they find Coulson waiting for them. He came back to surrender himself, perhaps in hopes of stopping Hydra permanently!
Being thrown under the bus sounds quite unpleasant.
The word ‘frenemy’ is most useful.
Fitz is also interested in these Deathlok upgrades, they must be something to marvel! And they can see hidden things like the tiniest of weapons and those nifty facial masks.
Coulson offers to send Ward for the Tahiti treatment as part of his deal. I have my doubts about this memory erasure process however.
Skye’s loyalty to SHIELD and towards protecting the innocent is refreshing.
Jaiying’s concern for her InHuman family is also quite touching. She also seems fully aware that someone is seeking her members out.
